Quiz 3: Lymphatic System Flashcards
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
1) Drain excess fluid from the body tissues and transport it back to venous circulation
2) Recirculate proteins that escape from vascular capillaries
3) Absorb fat not taken up in digestive system and transport it back to the venous circulation
4) Contain and transport cells and products of the immune system
What is lymph?
A clear and watery fluid similar to blood plasma
What are lymphatic capillaries?
Originate from most tissues in the body and merge to form larger lymphatic vessels
What is the right lymphatic duct?
- Drains the upper RIGHT quarter, and empties into junction of right internal jugular and right subclavian veins
What is the thoracic duct?
Drains the remaining areas of the body that aren’t upper right quarter
- Travels through left posterior thorax emptying into the internal jugular or left subclavian vein
What is the order of lymphatic flow?
Lymphatic capillaries →lymphatic vessels → major lymphatic vessels→ lymphatic ducts→ venous system
What is Thymus?
Plays a central role in the development of the immune system by creating and storing lymphocytes called T cells
What is bone marrow?
Site of production of white blood cells including B cells
What are lymph nodes?
Filter lymph that passes through.
- high concentration found in axial, necki groin
Location and function of the spleen
- location: upper left Quadrant
-function:largest lymphatic organ. Filters blood, recycle aging red blood cells and circulating microorganism. Supply T and B cells
What are lymphatic nodules
Small masses of lymphatic tissue that are nor surrounded by a capsule.
What is MALT?
Found in the mucous membranes lining the GI tract, urinary tract, reproductive tract, and respiratory airways.
What is blood hydrostatic pressure?
Push fluid out of the capillary
What is blood colloid osmotic pressure?
Pulls fluid into the capillary
What is starlings law?
Pressure at interstitial space is zero
