Quiz 1: ANS Flashcards
What is the Autonomic Nervous System?
A division of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiration
What are the two branches of the ANS?
1) Sympathetic Nervous System
2) Parasympathetic Nervous System
What are the 2 Neurons between the central nervous system and the organ/system
1) Pre ganglionic neuron
- Cell body located in the CNS within the brain or spinal cord and its axon going to the PNS to synapse with the second neuron
2) Post-ganglionic:
- Cell body located within a ganglion in the PNS and its axon going to the effector organ/tissue
Primary neurotransmitter of the Parasympathetic nervous system
Acetylcholine
Primary neurotransmitter of the Sympathetic nervous system
Norepinephrine
What is responsible for the “Fight or flight” response which prepares the body for physical activity or stress
Sympathetic nervous system
SNS effects on HR, BP, and RR
Increases all
SNS impact on digestive and non-essential functions
Decreased
Where are preganglionic cells located on the spinal cord?
T1-L3 (thoracolumbar outflow)
What is responsible for the “rest and digest” response which promotes relaxation and digestion
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Parasympathetic Nervous effect on HR, BP, and RR
Decreases
Parasympathetic effect on digestive and non essential functions during long periods of rest and relaxation
Increases
Effect on Iris
Sympathetic Stimulation: Pupil Dilation
Parasympathetic Stimulation: Pupil constriction
Effect on salivary gland
Sympathetic Stimulation:
- Saliva production reduced
Parasympathetic Stimulation:
- Saliva production increased
Effect on oral/nasal mucosa
Sympathetic Stimulation:
Mucus production reduced
Parasympathetic Stimulation:
-Mucus Production Increased
