What are the cognitive S/S of depression?
- Helpless, hopeless worthless, “life is not worth living”
- Poor concentration and memory, inability to make decisions
- Suicidal thoughts
- Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities
How does depression relate to sadness and grief?
- depression does not equal grief
- Grief is normal part of the mourning process
- Grief does not demonstrates feelings of worthlessness, severe guilt, or desire to die
What are the physiological S/S of depression?
- inability to sleep or sleeps too much
- Loss of appetite or increased hunger, especially for carbohydrates
- Joint/muscle pain, GI distress, feelings of malaise

- Fewer symptoms that are less severe
- can be described as a “depressed personality”
- lack (or less present) the neurovegetative symptoms (eating and sleeping)
- can progress to MDD
What are the cognitive S/S of anxiety/anxiety disorders?
- Irrational fears, worry, apprehension
- impaired memory and concentration
- catastrophizing
What are the physiological S/S of anxiety/anxiety disorders?
- Somatization- aches, pains, discomforts, without a physical cause
- Increased sympathetic arousal- increased HR, BP, palpitations, sweating, SOB, increased m. tension
- Nausea, GI distress, dizziness, paresthesias
What are the mood/emotion S/S of anxiety/anxiety disorders?
- “Anxious” thoughts and feelings, terror
- Irrational fears
- May be constant (generalized anxiety disorder) or transient (panic disorder, social or other phobias)
What are the behavioral S/S of anxiety/anxiety disorders?
- Very emotionally “needy” or clingy
- Avoidance of anxiety-producing situations
- Constantly asking for reassurance and guidance
- May repeatedly request help when making simple decisions
- May exhibit rigid and controlling behaviors
- Restless, pacing movements, unable to sit still
What are the appraisal problems associated with anxiety disorders?
- Catastrophization- every molehill becomes a mountain
- Somatization- amplification of somatic symptoms
What are the other names for major depressive disorder?
- clinical depression

It is also a life threatening illness with high mortatlity rate
What is the DSM-IV-TR requirements for MDD?
essential features of MDD must occur most of the day, every day, for at least 2 weeks
