Mechanism of action of quinolones
A
Broad spectrum and bactericidal, inhibits DNA synthesis

MHRA alerts for quinolones (what increases risks)
A
- May induce convulsions w or w/ history. Taking NSAIDs concurrently can induce
- Tendon damage (within 48 hours or several months after). CI in those with quinolone-related tendon disorders, >60 (more prone to tendon dmg), increased risk of also taking corticosteroids, stop immediately if suspected
- Aortic aneruysm and dissection
- Disabling and potential long-lasting irreverislbe SEs (MSK and NS)
- Heart valve regurgitation - report SoB (esp when lying down), swelling ankles, feet, abdomen, new palpitations)

Convulsions, QT interval prolongation, c.diff, hypersensitivty, GI upset, rupture of muscle tendons

A
Drugs that pro-long QT interval - corticosteroids, Methotrexate, NSAIDs, theophylline
