quick revision cards Flashcards
What is a tissue made up of?
A group of cells with similar structure and function.
What is an organ made up of?
Tissues. One organ may contain several tissues.
What is an organ system made up of?
Groups of organs the perform a particular function.
Give 3 examples of animal tissues.
Muscular tissue-which can contract to bring about movement.
Glandular tissue- which can produce substances such as enzymes and hormones.
epithelial tissue- which covers some parts of the body
An animal organ contains muscular tissue, glandular tissue and epithelial tissue.
What do they do?
Muscular-to allow contents to move through the digestive system.
glandular- to produce digestive juices.
epithelial- to cover the outside and the inside of the stomach.
List the 5 things in an animal digestive system.
glands, e.g. pancreas and salivary glands the stomach and small intestine the liver the small intestine the large intestine.
What do glands do?
They produce digestive juices.
What happens in the stomach and small intestine?
Its where digestion occurs.
What does the liver do?
It produces bile which emulsifies lipids.
Define bile.
A blueish-greenish alkaline fluid which aids digestion and it is produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder.
What happens in the small intestine?
Where the absorption of soluble food occurs.
What happens in the large intestine?
Water is absorbed from the undigested food, producing faeces/waste.
Give 4 examples of plant tissues.
Epidermal tissues
Palisade mesophyll
Spongy mesophyll
xylem and phloem cells.
What do epidermal tissues do?
Cover the plant.
What does palisade mesophyll do?
It carries out photosynthesis.
