Define osmosis.
A
Osmosis is a special case of diffusion.
The movement of water across a partially permeable membrane from a higher water concentration to a lower water concentration.

What is a partially permeable membrane?
A
A membrane that is permeable to small molecules for water and certain solutes but does not allow the passage of large solute molecules.

Why do the water molecules pass both ways through the membrane during osmosis?
A
Because there is a steady net flow of water in the region with fewer water molecules.
