Mitosis Flashcards
What does the nucleus contain?
The nucleus contains genetic information in the form of chromosomes.
What are chromosomes?
Coiled up lengths of DNA.
How many chromosomes/pairs are there?
46 chromosomes=23 pairs.
Define Mitosis.
The stage in the cell cycle where cells divide.
How do multicellular organisms use mitosis?
Multi cellular organisms use mitosis to grow or replace cells.
Finish the sentence:
At the end of the cycle there is a result of….
Two cells identical to the original cell; with the same numbers of chromosomes.
Identify the 5 steps of mitosis cell division.
- DNA in long strings
- cell grows and increases
- DNA duplicates
- cell fibers pull them apart
- Nucleus divides into 2 new daughter cells
In a chromosome the left arm has the same DNA as the right arm of the chromosomes, true or false?
True.
During cell division, where do the chromosomes line up?
In the centre of the cell.
What happens before a cell divides?
It grows and increases the amount of subcellular structure e.g. ribosomes and mitochondria.
Define subcellular structure.
Structures within a cell.
