Question 1 Flashcards
Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory
Child develops within a complex system of relationships affected by multiple levels of the surrounding environment
The levels in Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory
1) Microsystem
2) Mesosystem
3) Exosystem
4) Macrosystem
5) Chronosystem
Microsystem
Innermost level, consists of activities and interaction patterns in childs immediate surroundings with bidirectional relationships
Mesosystem
Encompasses connections between microsystems, such as: school, neighbourhood, home. E.g. child’s academic achievement depends not only on classroom but also parental involvement in school life
Exosystem
Consists of social settings that do not contain children but nevertheless affect children’s experiences in immediate settings. E.g. workplace, which offer flexible work schedules, paid maternity/paternity leave and sick leave when child is ill
Macrosystem
Outer most level consisting of cultural values, laws, customs and resources. Support at inner levels dependent on priority macrosystem gives to childrens needs
Chronosystem
Interaction is ever changing
