Characteristics of 1st Stage of Childbirth
Longest stage, lots of contractions and cervix relaxes causing it too dilate and thin out
Characteristics of 2nd Stage of Childbirth
Uterine contractions increase in strength and the infant is delivered
Characteristics of 3rd Stage of Childbirth
Placenta is expelled
What is Anoxia
Oxygen deprivation at birth
What can Anoxia lead to
Brain damage or later cognitive language problems
2 Causes of Anoxia
1) Squeezing of umbilical cord
2) failing to breath after birth
3 Reflexes present at birth
1) Rooting reflex
2) Moro reflex
3) Babinski reflex
Rooting reflex
When cheek near corner of mouth is stroked baby turns head in that direction
Moro reflex
startle reflex
Babinski reflex
stroke foot and toe curls in (if absent, potential sign of neurological damage)
