Qualitative vs Quantitative Methods Flashcards
1
Q
What is a qualitative method?
A
Methods that collect detailed info (e.g. theories) rather than testing predictions
2
Q
What are examples of qualitative methods?
A
- Case studies
- Unstructured interviews
- Ppt observation
3
Q
What are some disadvantages of qualitative methods?
A
- Difficult to replicate
- Limited generalisability b/c findings are likely to only reflect individuals studied
- Researcher bias - researchers can become close to ppts
4
Q
Define researcher bias. How can we prevent this?
A
- Researcher bias - researcher interprets results subjectively
- Triangulation - using multiple measures to cross-validate findings
- ensures they don’t lose professional objectivity
5
Q
What is a quantitative method?
A
Methods that test hypotheses & generate supporting or opposing results
6
Q
Give examples of quantitative methods.
A
- Experiments
2. Correlational research
7
Q
What are some advantages of quantitative methods?
A
- High generalisability - designed to gather facts that can be applied to TP
- Objective - less open to researcher bias
- More reliable - more scientific, so easier to replicate
