Observation Flashcards
1
Q
What is observation? What are the different types of observation?
A
- Research method involving watching & recording behaviour
- Naturalistic
- Controlled
- Overt
- Covert
- Ppt
- Non-ppt
2
Q
What is naturalistic observation?
A
- Conducted in everyday environment
- Suitable for studying everyday behaviour
- Can be overt or covert
3
Q
What is a controlled observation?
A
- Conducted in lab/controlled environment to encourage behaviour being investigated
- Suitable when its not practical to wait for the behaviour to occur naturally
- Tend to also be overt
4
Q
What is a overt observation?
A
Ppts aware they are being observed
5
Q
What is a covert observation?
A
Ppts unaware they’re being observed
6
Q
What is a ppt observation?
A
Observer becomes involved in group being studied
- may lose objectivity
7
Q
What is a non-ppt observation?
A
Observer watches and records behaviour without getting involved
8
Q
Strengths and weaknesses of observation?
A
- Strengths
- Reliability can be checked w inter-reliability - several observers record and compare to check for agreement - Weaknesses
- Can lack validity - observer bias
- Unreliable - each coded behaviour must be operationalised + observers must be well-trained to correctly record them
- Unethical - Lacks informed consent
