Correlational Research Flashcards
1
Q
What is correlational research?
A
Non-experimental method where researcher measures relationship between two or more CO-VARIABLES
2
Q
How is the relationship between co-variables represented?
A
Scatter grams
3
Q
Strengths and weaknesses of correlation research?
A
- Strengths
- Quicker and cheaper when there’s multiple co-variables THAN EXPERIMENTAL ways
- More ethical than experimental - compare co-variables rather than manipulating behaviour
- Weaknesses
- Cannot establish cause and effect - can’t say one variable causes another to occur bc it could be the other way around or caused by an unstudied 3rd
4
Q
What is a case study?
A
In-depth investigation of unique person/group/event
5
Q
Strengths of a case study?
A
- Suitable for unique circumstances that could not have been staged ethically/practically
- Provides most in-depth info about an ind
- Stimulates research into new areas of psychology
6
Q
Weaknesses of a case study?
A
- Unreliable - can’t be replicated bc those studied are unique
- Lacks generalisability
- May lose objectivity - researcher bias b/c intensely involved in gathering data
