Qualitative Data Analysis Flashcards
Reflective journalling
Researchers write notes during the data collection stage to add to observations and thoughts about the data as it is initially presented
Coding
The process of progressive marking, sorting, resorting, defining, and redefining the collected data
Data reduction
The process of selecting, focussing, simplifying, abstracting, and transforming data that appear in the transcription of interviews, field notes, and observations
Partitioning variables
Breaking down codes into subcodes or themes into subthemes
Abstraction
The process of generalizing complex events in the real world to the concepts that underlie them, removing the complexities of the situation
Factoring
Generating words to express common findings
Intervening variables
Variables that link concepts together
Conceptual coherence
Linking the overarching “how and why” of the phenomenon under study
Descriptive coding
Coding of factual information/knowledge, ie gender, age, ethnicity
Topic coding
Coding of a particular subject, short phrases, grouping of words
Analytical coding
Identifying patterns within codes which create themes
Semantic
Little analysis beyond what the participant stated, although there may be some interpretation of the significance of the patterns
Latent analysis
Goal is to identify or examine underlying ideas, assumptions, and conceptualizations that shape or inform the content
Credibility
Truth of findings as judged by participants and others within the discipline
Auditability
Judged by the adequacy of information that leads the reader through the research process, from the research question to the findings and conclusion
Fittingness
The degree to which study findings are applicable outside the study situation and how meaningful the results are to individuals not involved in the research
Confirmability
Findings reflect the implementation of credibility, auditability, and fittingness standards
