Ch 4: Research Questions Flashcards
Purpose of developing research question
To guide the study design and the research methods.
Criteria for significance of a research question
Benefits people other than researcher. Applicable to nursing. Theoretically relevant. Lead to improved patient outcomes. May lead to altered practice.
Purpose/objective of research study
State the objectives the researcher hopes to achieve and the way the researcher will study the question.
PICOT question
Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Time frame
SPIDER question
Sample, Phenomenon of Interest, Design, Evaluation, Research type
Directional hypothesis
Indicates a theory base was used and that the researcher believes the evidence is indicative of a particular outcome
Research hypothesis
Reflects what the researchers predict they will see in the study results
Statistical hypothesis
Used for statistical testing purposes, states there is no relationship between variables
When research questions should be used
If purpose is exploratory, descriptive, or hypothesis-generating
When hypotheses should be used
When purpose is testing causal or associative relationships between variables
Testability
Measurable by quantitative methods
