Qualitative approaches to research Flashcards
Phenomenology
The process of learning and constructing the meaning of human experience through intensive dialogue with persons who are living the experience
Hermeneutics
A theoretical framework used to help understand or interpret phenomena from the study of those phenomena. Concerns the making of human intentions, beliefs, actions, experience.
Bracketing
Setting aside personal biases when engaging with participants
Grounded theory
Complex approach used to develop a theory about a phenomenon rooted in the observation of empirical data, purpose is to construct a theory where none exists or existing theory fails
Constant comparative method
Data is continuously compared to the new data as it comes into the study
Open coding
Data is examined line by line, categorized into discrete parts, and then analyzed for similarities and differences
Ethnography
Research process of learning about people from them, goal is to understand the participants view of their world
Emic view
Participant/insiders view of their world
Etic view
Researcher/outsiders view of the world
Domains
Categories that can include smaller categories
Case study
Intensive exploration of a single unit of study to provide in-depth description of essential dimensions of the phenomenon
Historical research
Examines events of the past with the hope that a better understanding of events will lead to improvement in practice and the profession
Action research
A systematic participatory approach that enables people to further their understanding of a problem and then formulate an action toward resolution
Participatory action research
Goal is to change society through a collaborative research process
Community-based participatory research
Method by which the voice of a community is systematically accessed to plan context-appropriate action
Triangulation
The process of bringing more than one source of data to bear on a single point, used to corroborate a phenomenon
Meta-synthesis
Integrating multiple qualitative research findings on a topic using comparative analysis and interpretive synthesis
