Quadriceps Flashcards
Rectus Femoris
Origin: Anterior inferior iliac spine and ilium superior to acetabular
Insertion: Base of patella and by patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity
Actions: Extends leg at knee joint, rectus femoris also steadies the hip joint and helps the iliopsoas flex the thigh at the hip joint
Vastus Lateralis
Origin: Greater trochanter and lateral lip of lines aspera of femur and gluteal tuberosity
Insertion: Base of patella and by patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity
Action: Extends leg at knee joint
Vastus Medialis
Origin: Intertrochanteric line and medial lip of linea aspera of femur and gluteal tuberosity
Insertion: Base of patella and by patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity
Action: Extends leg at knee joint
Vastus Intermedius
Origin: Anterior and lateral surfaces of femoral shaft
Insertion: Base of patella and by the patellar ligament to the tibial tuberosity
Action: Extends the leg at the knee joint
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Not a quad, but an anterior thigh muscle
Origin: Anterior superior iliac spine and anterior iliac crest
Insertion: Iliotibial tract that attaches to the lateral condyle of tibia
Actions: Abducts, medially rotates, and flexes the thigh at the hip; helps keep the knee extended
