QTL mapping Flashcards
what is QTL mapping
quantitative trait loci - polygenic (behaviour, carcass traits, growth)
use DNA markers to find chromosomal regions with the trait
try to find genes within identified regions - positional candidate genes
what is a positional canidate gene?
trait mapped to chromosomal region
gene under investigation resides in this area
quantitative trait loci (QTL)
what is a functional candidate gene?
- function associated with trait
- appetite pathway and feed intake
what is an example of a behaviour trait
canadian beef reference herd
130 calves in 17 embryo transfer families
observe behavioural traits along all the crosses
What is an object-measuring device?
isolation
observing maternal and socail behavious - agression in livestock
object detects movement - held individual on platform for one minute straight and movement and temperature was taken
how was temperament measured
measured at weaning (6 mo)
held on scale platform for 1 min
visually isolated
quantified amount
how is habituation recorded
animals ran through device every two weeks for 3 months
difference in score between first and last session - did they get used to it
w
hat is an example of anecdotal support
- one night a pen of heifers were frightened
- two animals became so agitated that they ran into a fence and broke their jaw
- both were memebers of the same family and had high temperament scores
what is DRD4 in mice
emotionaal - receptor activated by neurotranslater dopamine
what is DRD4 in horses
curiosity and vigilance
what is DRD4 in dogs
aggression
what is leptin
causes fat deposition in mice
obese gene
involed in appetite regulation - signalling for individual to stop eating
