What is Qi?
Qi is the essential material to create new things and it presents itself in many different forms in the body and world around us. It can be dense and immaterial.
What is Essence?
Pre Natal: Parents, Kidney, Root of Qi
Post Natal: Derived from Food and fluids, extracted from the lungs, stomach and spleen.
Kidney essence: Stored in the kidneys
What are the functions of Qi?
Transforming: essential for transformation of food into fluid.
Transporting: essential for the transportation of various substances
Holding: Holds fluid and blood, essential so the fluids do not leak out.
Raising: Ensures that the body structures are held in the proper place
Protecting: Protects the body from invasion of exterior pathogens
Warming: Function of Yang-Qi
What are the Qi Mechanism’s?
Ascending

What are the different types of Qi?
Yuan Qi (original qi) essence in the form of qi, basis of kidney qi, facilitates the transformation of blood. Gu Qi (food qi): Transformation of food into Qi, originates from the stomach and spleen, origin of qi and blood. Combines with air to form Zong qi. Zong Qi (gathering qi): Nourishes the heart and lungs, Zhen Qi (True Qi): Gathering Qi is transformed into zhen qi. Originates from the lungs and comes in two forms: Yang and Wei Qi. Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi): Nourishes internal organs, linked to blood, flows in channels and blood vessels. Wei Qi (defensive qi): Exterior of the body, function is to protect. Zhong Qi (central qi): True Qi of the stomach and spleen Zheng Qi (upright qi): All types of qi that defend the body from invasion by external pathogens.
What is the pathology of Qi?

What is Blood (xue)?
Qi and Blood transform into each other, they are like yin and yang.
Derived mostly from Food-Qi produced by the spleen
Blood’s main function is to nourish and moisten the body.
Houses the mind (Shen)
What are body fluids?
Originate from food and drink, transformed and separated by the spleen
Assist the small intestine in separating impure and pure fluids
Provide Qi to the bladder
Assist the Triple Burner
Qi transforms and transports fluids
What is Jin Ye?
Jin: Fluid, clear, light, thin/watery
Ye: Liquid, turbid, heavy, dense
What is the mind (Shen)?
Is the spirit/mind
Housed in the blood/heart
Responsible for consciousness, feelings, sleep, wisdom, senses.
What is the effect of the 5 emotions on Qi?
Anger: Rises QI Joy: Slows Qi Pensiveness: Knots Qi Sadness: Dissolves Qi Fear: Makes Qi descend
Shock: scatters qi
What is the movement of lung qi?
Descends to the kidney and bladder.
ascends to disperse Wei qi and fluids to the skin.
Regulates the entering and exiting of qi in and out of the body.
What is the movement of liver qi?
Liver qi ascends and controls the free flow of qi in all directions.
What is the movement of kidney qi?
Ascends to the lung and heart in the upper heater.
Descends qi to the bladder.
