Q7 Atlanto-occipital joint Flashcards
State the type of joint
Synovial ellipsoid joint
Briefly describe the articular surfaces
Oval articular facets on the upper surface of the atlas are concave about both axes,
Articular surfaces of the occipital condyles are reciprocally curved (elongated ovals and convex)
Both surfaces are covered in hyaline cartilage.
List 3 ligaments or membranes associated with this joint
Anterior atlanto-occipital membrane
Posterior atlanto-occipital membrane
Ligamentum nuchae
TECTORIAL MEMBRANE
Name two movements that occur at this joint. Give a brief explanatory description for each movement
Flexion: Retraction/flexion (tucking chin back) of the chin
Extension: Protraction/extension (pocking chin forwards) of the chin.
Lateral flexion, taking the earlobe to the shoulder
