Give the position of this muscle
Deepest sheet of the abdominal muscles, fibres are arranged horizontally or transversely in the anterolateral abdominal wall
State the attachments of this muscle
PROXIMAL- lateral 1/3 of the inguinal ligament, anterior 2/3 of the inner lip of the iliac crest. Thoracolumbar fascia and superiorly from the inner surface of the costal cartilages of the lower 6 ribs. DISTAL- By the aponeurotic sheet to the linea alba. By the conjoint tendon to the pubic crest and the pecten pubis.
State the action of this muscle
Compression and support of the abdominal viscera. Increases intra-abdominal pressure so giving support to the lumbar spine
State 2 functional activities in which this abdominal muscle plays an important role
Produces pelvic tilt, maintaining the correct angle of the pelvis for posture and walking. Draws up pelvis in lateral flexion, important when walking with crutches. Sneezing, vomiting, micturition etc
