Q5 With reference to the vertebral column Flashcards
Describe the articular surfaces of the facet joints between the 5th and 6th thoracic vertebrae
Are on the superior and inferior articular processes of adjoining vertebrae, oval in shape covered in articular cartilage forming a plain synovial joint. Superior facet faces posteriorly, upwards and laterally. Inferior facet faces anteriorly, downwards and laterally. Facet are sloping vertically
Explain how the direction of the articular surfaces influences the movement at this joint
Due to the axis of vertebral rotation and the vertical sloping aspect of the joint surfaces rotation is facilitated over side flexion and flex/extension. Joints move into extension briefly before achieving close-pack/position of most congruence
Name 3 ligaments that support the facet joints in the thoracic spine
Supraspinous, Interspinous, Ligamentum Flava, intertransverse, capsular ligament
List the movements that occur in the thoracic spine
R and L Rotation, Flexion/extension, side/lateral flexion to R and L
