State the position and shape of this muscle
Dome shaped concave downwards, separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities
State the attachments of this muscle to the thoracic outlet
Lumbar section- Right Crus from L1 -3 bodies and discs.
Left crus L1-2
Coatal section- internal aspects of lower 6 ribs and costal cartilages.
Sternal section- posterior aspect of Xiphoid process
Describe, in sequence the action of this muscle on the thoracic diamenters
It incresase the thoracic diameter, first by central tendon descending (vertical), then lower ribs move outwards (Transverse) and sternum is moved forwards (A-P)
Identify one other functional activity apart from breathing that this muscle plays an important role
Expulsive acts (Vomiting, sneezing etc)
Supports lumbar spine
Assists venous/lymphatic drainage
