Q3 Bio - Quiz 2 Evolution Flashcards
Enumerate 3 evidences of evolution
Fossil Record, Structures/Anatomy, Biogeography
Compare and Contrast
Relative and Absolute Dating
Both are methods of determining the age of rocks. fossils, and other geo materials.
Relative: determining the age of something relative to the ages of the objects around it, uncertain
Absolute: determining the age of something using various scientific techniques, more exact
Provide solid evidence that organisms from the past are not the same as those found today
Fossils
3 ways of fossilization
Mold and Cast, Preservation, Trace Fossils, Petrifaction
Compare and Contrasts
Homologous and Analogous Structure
Homo: same structure, diff function
Ana: same function, diff structure
The change in frequency of an existing gene variant in a population due to random sampling of organisms
Genetic Drift
Stating that the genetic variation in a population will remain constant from one generation to the next in the absence of disturbing factors
Heidy-Weinberg equilibrium
A process by which organisms with certain traits gain reproductive advantage over organisms of the same population without those traits
Selection
Organism’s structure that serve the same function between organisms but are different in internal anatomy
Analogous
Result of migrating individuals that breed in a new location
Gene flow
3 major mechanisms that drive evolution
Mutation, non-random mating, gene flow, genetic drift, natural selection
A group of organisms that can potentially interbreed with one another to produce viable, fertile offspring
Species
The idea that species change over time, give rise to new species, and share a common ancestor.
Evolution
Enumerate
3 modes of speciation
Allopatric, parapatric, peripatric, sympatric
Enumerate 3 scientists/philos who contributed in the development of evolutionary thought
Charles Darwin, Hugo de Vries, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck
Compare and Contrast
Micro and Macroevolution
Microevolution: small-scale evolutionary changes that occur within a population over a relatively short period of time.
Macroevolution: large-scale evolutionary changes that occur over long periods of time
Both are scales of evolutionary changes
Compare and Contrast
Body fossils and trace fossils
Body fossils are fossils that were originally parts of an organism such as bones and teeth, while trace fossils are fossils made by an organism or left behind by one such as footprints.
A process where particular beneficial trait is reproduced in succeeding generations more than other traits
Natural Selection
Refers to the evolutionary process of formation of a new species from the existing ones
Speciation
Body part that is imperfectly developed and not able to function
Vestigial Structure
Change in a population genetic makeup over time
Mutation
