Q2. Coasts Flashcards
What is weathering?
The breaking up of material on the spot.
What are the three types of weathering?
Mechanical, biological, chemical
What is mass movement?
The movement of material down a slope under gravity.
Give two examples of mass movement:
Rock falls, slumping (rotational slip), landslides
Name 2 ways human activity can affect the coastal processes:
Agriculture, settlements, forestry
What is erosion?
The breaking up and removal of material.
Give 4 examples of erosion? Tip: ha, a, s, a
Hydraulic action, abrasion, solution, attrition
What is transportation?
The movement of material by water.
Name 4 ways that material can be moved by water.
Traction, saltation, solution, suspension
What is deposition?
When the sea doesn’t have enough energy to carry material so it gets dropped.
What is longshore drift an example of?
Deposition.
Concordant coastlines create what landform if there is a weakness?
Coves.
Discordant coastlines can form what two types of landforms?
Headlands and bays.
How is a stump formed?
Hydraulic action -> crack -> hydraulic action + abrasion -> cave -> arch -> collapses -> stack -> stump.
What is it called when a spit joins the mainland to an island?
Tombolo.
