Q1. Geology & Landscapes Flashcards
Sedimentary rock examples
Sandstone, limestone, chalk, clay
Igneous rock examples
Granite, obsidian, pumice basalt
Metamorphic rock examples
Marble, slate, schist
Sedimentary meaning
Sediment is broken down by weathering and erosion from the landscape, transported and laid down on the bed of lakes and sea. Layers are compacted (squeezed) and turned into rock.
Igneous meaning
Molten rock (magma or lava) cools, solidifies and turns to rock.
Difference between intrusive and extrusive igneous rock.
Intrusive - forms underground, extrusive - forms on the surface
Sedimentary rock characteristics (give two)
Contains fossils, formed in layers, less resistant (soft), permeable
Igneous rock characteristics (give two)
Resistant (hard), contains crystals, impermeable
Metamorphic rock characteristics (give two)
Resistant (hard), impermeable, formed by heat & pressure
Where can you find sedimentary rock?
Large areas of Southern and Eastern England. Most of Wales and Ireland.
Where can you find igneous rock?
Scotland, Lake District, Dartmoor, Northern Ireland, Snowdonia
Where can you find Metamorphic rock?
Scotland, Northern Ireland
