Q1 Exam 1 Embryology ONLY Flashcards
secondary oocyte
egg prior to fertilization, after first division (has first polar body)
zona pellucida
the exterior glycoprotein coat of a secondary oocyte
follicular cells
cells surrounding a secondary oocyte in layers
corona radiata
zona pellucida + follicular cells around secondary oocyte
acrosome cap
specialized lysosome that allows sperm into cell, but cannot fertilize until it is gone (capacitation)
zona reaction
once sperm is in oocyte, no other sperms can enter, and the corona radiata has disappeared
pronucleus
female forms from second meiotic division, male forms from sperm
zygote
forms from fertilized oocyte when pronuclei merge
morula
a superficial layer around a central core of cells
blastomere
new embryonic cell, totipotent
trophoblast
usually external layer of cells
embryoblast
inner cell mass
blastocystic cavity
formed by secretions from blastocysts
animal pole
side of the conceptus closest to the embryoblast
vegetal pole
side of the conceptus farthest from the embryoblast
rauber’s layer
layer of trophoblast that will disintegrate to form the epiblast
hypoblast
cells formed to enclose the exocoelomic cavity
primitive yolk sac
sac formed when the hypoblast finishes joining to enclose the exocoelomic cavity
epiblast
forms tight junctions at the animal pole of conceptus, replaces rauber’s layer
embryonic disc
bilaminar disc of epiblast and adjacent hypoblast
extraembryonic mesoderm
could be somatic (everything else) or visceral (surrounds hypoblast)
definitive yolk sac
formed from primitive yolk sac when extraembryonic mesoderm is formed
amniotic membrane
formed from the epiblast to create a second cavity, amniotic sac
primitive streak
appears on the dorsal aspect of the of the embryonic disc, reaching into the center from the connecting stalk attachment point
