1. Exudative - inflamm cytokines activ pulm endothelium and recruit neutrophils to lungs -> release of inflamm mediators. Endothelial damage leads to incr cap permeability -> leakage of protein rich fluid into alveolar space.
   organization of the edema and cell debris lead to formation of hyaline membranes
2. Proliferative phase - 1-2 wks later, endothelial cells, pneumocytes, fibroblasts proliferate to attempt to repair damage lung. collagen deposited, scarring may occur. edema reabsorbed
3. Fibrotic phase - in minority pts, excess collagen deposition leads to irreversible pulm fibrosis and pulm hypertension
