1750, Britain moved from being an agricultural country to one where most people lives in cities and worked in factories
Why were conditions in cities dreadful
-houses were cramped with many families sharing one room
-no sewage system so waster thrown on streets
-water was filthy and taps were next to areas where waste was dumped

Cholera disease
- came via trade routes from India
- 1831-1832, 1848, 1854 and 1866
- no one understood cause
- people beloved Government should involve itself as it killed poor and rich
John Snow
- during 1854 epidemic, he mapped locations of each death and found that they all collected their water from one pump
- epidemic ended when he forced people to go to other taps
- found that CESS PITS WERE LESS THAN A METRE AWAY FROM WATER PUMP and was leaking dirty water
