-Hindenburg made FRITZ VON PAPEN but army didn’t like him so he was forced to resign
Who was the second chancellor ?
-VON SCHLEICHER, old general popular with army DEC 1932, he failed to win support in Reichstag so reigned after 8 weeks
What did Von Papen convince Hindenburg to do ?
-to appoint hitler as chancellor, believing that he and other Weimar chancellors could control him
How did Hindenburg and Von Papen limit Hitler’s power ?
- only 3 other Nazi’s were allowed in hitlers cabinet
- Von Papen became Hitler’s vice chancellor
- Hindenburg was still President, most powerful man in government

- Hitler made people believe it was part of the communist plot to take over country
- persuaded Hindenburg to pass PROTECTION LAW

- gave Hitler the power to target communists, for example, he arrested 4000 leading communists
- helped him win election

-gave him power to make laws without approval of reichstag or president

THE CRACKDOWN
- used enabling law to put Nazi’s in charge of local government, council and police
- gestapo formed and concentration camps set up for political prisoners
- people too scared to oppose him

BANNING OF TRADE UNIONS
- took away their money and threw leaders in jail
- Trade unions were close allies with Communists and could be more powerful (stopped Kapp Putsch)

- banned all except Nazi’s
