Who discovered it and how

A

1928, Fleming

  • left one of his dishes open to research cause of infection, when he returned from his holiday, he found mould on it and around it, Germs stopped growing
  • but he couldn’t turn it into a drug so he wrote up his founding and left it

Florey and chain

A

1930s, were interested in his research and were able to make powdered penicillin and tested it on mice

  • then texted it on a human and kept him alive until it ran out
  • they struggled to produce more (money) so WHEN US GOVERNMENT JOINED WW2 they gave them $80 million to make more
  • this meant there was enough to treat all soldiers

What did researched and companies do when penicillin was the first line of antibiotics

  • produced thousands of new drugs
  • this meant lack of control
  • THALIDOMIDE was created as a sleeping pill for pregnant woman but could damage baby
  • led to rougher regulations and testing of new drugs

Impact of WW1 on modern surgery

A
  • WW1 was biggest and deadliest British had ever seen
  • BLOOD TRANSFUSION, 1915, ‘blood banks’ were set up for battle casualties
  • PLASTIC SURGERY, SKIN GRAFTS, as a result of fighting, many men had scars, GILLIES developed special hospital for army in 1917 for facial repairs, over 5000 were treated, could reconstruct faces
