Dispensing
the preparation and process of packaging, labeling, record keeping and transfer of prescription drug to a patient or an intermediary, who is respronsible for administration of the drug.
HMOs
Health Maintenance Organizations - A health insurance organization to which subscribers pay a predetermined fee in return for a range of medical services from physicians and healthcare workers registered w/ the organization.
Institutional Pharmacy
A pharmacy or other storage place as defined by regulations adopted by the Board which is part of or operated in conjunction with a medical facility.
Hospital Pharmacy
the portions of a hospital where drugs, medications, devices and other materials used in the diagnosis and treatment of injury, illness and disease (hereafter referred to as “drugs”) are manufactured produced, sold or distributed.
BPS
Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties -
ASHP
American societ of health system pharmacists - mergers of many hospitals and clinics into larger health systems. they also provide continuing education and member services.
ACCP

NABP
National Association of boards of pharmacy (exam taken to become a pharmacist)
NAPLEX
The North American Pharmacist Licensure Examinationis required in all US jurisdictions except CALIFORNIA, which administers its own exam.
MPJE
Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (most states require the pharmacist to pass a druglaw examination.
Terminal Distributors License
in order to operate a pharmacy and dispense drugs, one must display a “TDL” pruchased by the pharmacy and signed by the pharmacist in charge. The person that signs is ultimately responsible for all activity that occurs within the pharmacy.

The law that made prescriptions a requirement for dangerous drugs.
regulated the pharmeceutical industry , major manufacturers and researchers of drugs. This amendment required that studies be done to prove that a new drug is safe and effective for human health.
Adulterated drug
drugs made or dispensed in a facility or pharmacy that has unsanitary conditions. “a drug is adulterated if a decomposed substance is present, the item has been packaged under unsanitary conditions, or its strength/quality/purity is different from whats indicated on the label.”
Misbranded
Any important information missing when labeling a prescription bottle. “a drug is misbranded if the product labeling is false or misleading or it proper warnings or directions are absent.”
PHI
Protected Health Information - Patient’s information
PHI can only be disclosed if 1. provide treatment or routine work within the pharmacy. 2. obtain payment.
APhA
The American Pharmacists Association - founded in 1852, involves relaed organizations at the state and local levels so that pharmacists have a voice in the collective opinion of the organization.
AACP
The American Association of Collages of Pharmacy
PTEC
The Pharmacy Technician Educators Council - the educational council that helps form policy on pharmacy technician education.
BPS
Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties - recognizes specialties in pharmacy practice and sets standards for certification and serves as a coordination agency for pharmacy specialties.
Prescription orders
The drug orders received in the institutional environment and prescription orders are the drug orders received in an institution
Medication orders
sometimes referred to as physicians orders, though physicians orders encompass the other directions for treatment such as diet and physical therapy

the drugs that must be returned to the wholesaler or distributor. there are 3 main reasons 1. the drug was ordered in error. 2. the wholesaler filled the order wrong. 3. the drug has expired, or it is outdated and damaged.
