Psychopathology - The Cognitive Beheavioural Therapy - Treating Depression Flashcards
What is CBT?
cognitive behavioural therapy
What is becks general idea for CBT?
To challenge and restructure negative thinking so that they become more positive and rational
In what conditions can CBT be done and how regularly
In small groups of individually
Weekly sessions
What does CBT entail?
Focuses on present experiences
Patient is encouraged to ‘thought catch’ and challenge their neg thoughts and test them out as if they are scientist
Reinforcement of positive thoughts is encouraged
What does beck believe the impact of positive thinking will be
Positive thinking will lead to positive behaviour
What does beck use as a basis for CBT
Cognitive triad (neg thoughts abt self, world and future would be addressed)
Adv of CBT- respected
- widely respected
- supported by vast amount of research
- cost effective
-quite economical compared to other approaches e.g. psychodynamic
Strength of CBT - root cause
- under covers the underlying issues that caused depression in the first place
- unlike drugs which merely act as a plaster and mask symptoms of depression
- therefore CBT is a proper cure
Strength of CBT - long term
- has lasting positive outcomes
- low chance of patient relapsing compared to drugs
- High chance patient has actually been cured
- cost effective for the NHS
- unlikely to return to hospital
Disadv of CBT - effort
- most popular treatment is ant-depressant drugs
- drugs require a lot less effort than CBT
- however cujiper (2013) found that CBT is very effective with drug therapy, so maybe CBT on its own is not very effective
Disadv of CBT- mild
- very effective with those w mild depression and helps prevent it from getting worse
- not effective w those w severe depression, they would have to use. Drugs and medication
What does REBT stand for
Rational emotive behavioural therapy
Who developed REBT
Ellis
What is the genera idea of REBT
Irrational thoughts causes negative self statements so therapy involves making the depressed patients thing more rationally and in a positive manner
what are the three main things REBT involves (not the DEF)
Challenging - reinterpreting ABC model in a more positive and logical manner
Homework - assignments between therapy sessions testing out irrational beliefs in real world and replacing them w rational and possible beliefs
Behavioural activation - become more active and engaged in activities they used to take part in
What does DEF stand for
disputing irrational thought and behaviour
Effects of disputing and effective attitude to life
Feelings/emotions
What Is ‘disputing irrational thought and behaviour’
There are two ways of disputing
Logical disputing - used when beliefs don’t make sense logically and then are tested out ‘does this make sense’
Empirical disputing - whereby beliefs are not consistent in reality e.g. ‘everyone hates me’ there is no proof for this
What are the ‘Effects of disputing and effective attitude to life’
Changing self defeating beliefs into more rational beliefs, resulting in the client moving away from neg and irrational thinking
What are the feelings/emotions the patient would feel
More positive and rational, they will feel better
Having a positive impact on their behaviour
Adv of REBT - specific
- Flannaghan supports its effectiveness to treat depressive stroke victims
- suggesting REBT is effective for specific groups of people and can help them become more positive
Adv of REBT - drug vs REBT
- David (2008)
- compared 170 patients who had 14 weeks of REBT and compared w those who had drug fluoxetine treatment
- compared 6 months after the treatment
- REBT had better long term treatment compared to drug therapy
Disadv of REBT -unclear
- unclear if distorted neg thinking causes depression or whether it’s a symptom
- if it’s a symptom REBT is not getting to the root cause and depression may return in future
- this client is not cured
Disadv of REBT - articulating
- requires latent to be articulate and walking to talk abt their problems coherently
- thus not good treatment for those w severe depression if they’re unable to communicate well or those whi aren’t comfortable
- other treatment would be needed to be used
Disadv of REBT - skills
- success of treatment depends on the skills and expertise of the therapist
- the more skilled the better the therapeutic outcomes for the depressed client - essential for effectiveness
- thus psychologist must be highly skilled and develop a good rapport w client for effective treatment
