Q

Disadv of CBT - effort

A
  • most popular treatment is ant-depressant drugs
  • drugs require a lot less effort than CBT

Q

What does DEF stand for

A

disputing irrational thought and behaviour
Effects of disputing and effective attitude to life
Feelings/emotions

17
Q

What Is ‘disputing irrational thought and behaviour’

A

There are two ways of disputing
Logical disputing - used when beliefs don’t make sense logically and then are tested out ‘does this make sense’
Empirical disputing - whereby beliefs are not consistent in reality e.g. ‘everyone hates me’ there is no proof for this

18
Q

What are the ‘Effects of disputing and effective attitude to life’

A

Changing self defeating beliefs into more rational beliefs, resulting in the client moving away from neg and irrational thinking

19
Q

What are the feelings/emotions the patient would feel

A

More positive and rational, they will feel better
Having a positive impact on their behaviour

20
Q

Adv of REBT - specific

A
  • Flannaghan supports its effectiveness to treat depressive stroke victims
  • suggesting REBT is effective for specific groups of people and can help them become more positive
21
Q

Adv of REBT - drug vs REBT

A
  • David (2008)
  • compared 170 patients who had 14 weeks of REBT and compared w those who had drug fluoxetine treatment
  • compared 6 months after the treatment
  • REBT had better long term treatment compared to drug therapy
22
Q

Disadv of REBT -unclear

A
  • unclear if distorted neg thinking causes depression or whether it’s a symptom
  • if it’s a symptom REBT is not getting to the root cause and depression may return in future
  • this client is not cured
23
Q

Disadv of REBT - articulating

A
  • requires latent to be articulate and walking to talk abt their problems coherently
  • thus not good treatment for those w severe depression if they’re unable to communicate well or those whi aren’t comfortable
  • other treatment would be needed to be used
24
Q

Disadv of REBT - skills

A
  • success of treatment depends on the skills and expertise of the therapist
  • the more skilled the better the therapeutic outcomes for the depressed client - essential for effectiveness
  • thus psychologist must be highly skilled and develop a good rapport w client for effective treatment
