Psychopathology - Failure To Function Adequately Flashcards
Failure to function adequately definition
Abnormal behaviour causes an inability to cope with everyday life = behaviour may disrupt ability to work or affect relationships
Who suggested personal dysfunction has seven features?
Rosenhan and Seligman (1989)
Seven features of personal dysfunction (Sumoviv )
(Suffering) Personal distress
Unpredictability
Maladaptive behaviour
Observer discomfort
Vividness and unconventionality
Irrationality
Violation of moral standards
Personal distress
Feeling sad, anxious, worried or scared
Maladaptive behaviour
Behaviour stopping individuals from attaining life goals, both socially and occupationally
Unpredictability
Displaying unexpected behaviours characterised by the loss of control
Irrationality
Displaying behaviours which cannot be explained in a logical way
Observer discomfort
Displaying behaviour which causes discomfort in others
Violation of moral standards
Displaying behaviour which violates society’s ethical standards
Unconventionality
Displaying behaviour which doesn’t conform to what is generally done in a certain situation
Positive about failure to function adequately
Using the GAF scale means psychologists can accurately assess the degree of abnormality + how well the patient is or not coping with their daily life.
If not coping well = not functioning adequately = abnormal
Negatives failure to function - not always accompanied
- abnormality isn’t always accompanied by a failure to function.
- psychopaths can commit murders and still seem normal e.g. Ted bundy
Negative failure to function - normal
- times in someone’s life where it is normal and psychologically healthy to suffer from personal distress e.g. death of a loved one
- abnormal not to feel distress
Negative failure to function - other people
- behaviour may cause distress to other people and be seen as dysfunctional even if the person feels no personal distress
E.g. hiking while naked only makes other people experience observer discomfort
