- DSM contains descriptions, symptoms, and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders.
- It provides a common language for clinicians to communicate about their patients.
- Establishes consistent and reliable diagnoses that can be used in the research of mental disorders.
- DSM-1 was first published in 1952, last updated in May 2015 (DSM-5).

- They are regularly updated and show how disorders change over time.

- 2013 DSM-5, removed homosexuality as a mental disorder.
