Bipolar I disorder
Flight of ideas is a symptom of mania which is a symptom of bipolar I disorder
Panic Disorder
Anxiety Disorder
- Suffered at least one panic attack
- Worried about having panic attacks
- Panic attacks can be cued, but are more often uncued
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
Anxiety Disorder
- Tense/anxious much of the time about many issues
- Does NOT experience panic attacks
- Sx: Restlessness, tiring easily, poor concentration, irritability, muscle tension, and insomnia or restless sleep
Specific phobia
Anxiety Disorder
- Persistent, strong, and unreasonable fear of a certain object/situation
- 4 types: situational, natural environment, blood-injection-injury, and animal
Social phobia

1. Unreasonable, paralyzing fear of feeling embarrassed or humiliated while performing routine activities such as eating in public or using a public restroom
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Anxiety Disorder
- People feel intense fear, horror, or helplessness while experiencing, witnessing, or otherwise confronting an extremely traumatic event that involves actual or threatened death or serious injury to the self or others
- Sx must be present for more than a month, otherwise the dx is: acute stress disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

1. Has obsessions, compulsions, or both
Obsessions are thoughts/impulses
Compulsions are behaviors
Conversion disorder
Somatoform Disorder
- Experiences a change in sensory or motor function that has no discernible physical or physiological cause
- Begin or worsen after an emotional conflict or other stressor
Pain Disorder

1. Suffers clinically important pain whose onset or severity seems significantly affected by psychological factors
Somatization Disorder
Somatoform Disorder
- Experiences a variety of physical symptoms over an extended time period
- Has had at least 8 of the following physical sx that began before age 30, occurred over several years, and were not fully explained by any physical or physiological cause:
- pain in at least four areas of the body
- at least two GI sx (not including pain)
- at least one sexual symptom
- at least one pseudoneurological sx (ex. poor balance or double vision)
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Somatoform Disorder
1. Preoccupied with a slight physical anomaly or imagined defect in appearance, often involving the face, hair, breasts, or genitalia
Hypochondriasis
Somatoform Disorder
- Fears of having a serious illness for at least six months
- Misinterpretation of bodily sx, and they are not relieved when medical investigation reveals no illness
- A different disorder is diagnosed if the ideas are delusional or better explained by a mood, anxiety, or other somatoform disorder
Schizophrenia
Psychotic Disorder
- Person feels out of touch with reality
- Has positive and negative sx
Paranoid schizophrenia
Delusions and hallucinations
Disorganized schizophrenia
Negative sx (flat affect, quantity of speech, no will to do things); disorganized speech; Disorganized behavior
