Psychology Chp 6-7 Flashcards
Consciousness
the level of awareness a indvidual has of their thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and existence.
Psychological construct
agreed upon and description and understanding of psychological phenomena that cannot be overtly measured or observed
NWC Normal waking conciousness
a state of consciousness in which an individual is awake and aware
ASC Alterted state conciousness
a state of conciousness that is distincally different from normal waking conciousness in terms of quality of experience and levels of awareness
Sleep
a regular and naturally occurring state of conciousness that involves a loss of awareness and disnegagement with internal and external stimuli
REM
rapid eye movement a type of sleep charcaterized by rapid eye movement, high levels of brain activity and low levels of physical activity
NREM
non rapid eye movement a type of sleep charcaterized by lack of rapid eye movement and is subdivided into three stages
Sleep episode
the full duration of time spent asleep
Sleep cycle
approximately 90 minute period that repeats during a sleep period in which an individual progresses through stages of REM and NREM
Name 3 characteristics of REM
- High active brain less active body
- Vivid dreams occur
- Takes up 20-25% of sleep episodes
Name 3 characteristics of NREM
- Less active brain
- Muscle movement is possible
- Takes up 75-80% of sleep episodes
What are the 3 stages of NREM
NREM stage 1 - Transitions from awake into light sleep, hypangotic state. Loses awareness but aware of faint sounds, can be easily woken up.
NREM stage 2 - Light sleep, majority of sleep is spent in stage 2. Sleeper is considered truly asleep due to brain waves.
NREM stage 3 - Deep stage of sleep, difficult to wake sleeper in this stage. If woken sleeper is drowsy and disorientated. Sleep walking and talking occur in this stage
What is EEG
a device that detects, amplifies, and records electrical activity of the brain
What is EMG
a device that detects, amplifies, and records electrical activity of the body’s muscles.
What is EOG
a device that detects, amplfies, and records electrical activity of the muscles responsible for eye movement
Sleep diaries
Info in sleep diaries
a record containing self reported descriptions from an individual about their sleeping periods.
- Duration of sleep
- Quality of sleep
- Thoughts and feelings before and after sleep
Video monitoring
the use of a camera and audio technologies to record an individual as they sleep
Biological rhythms
repeated biological processes that are regulated by internal mechanisms
