Q

What are the 3 stages of NREM

A

NREM stage 1 - Transitions from awake into light sleep, hypangotic state. Loses awareness but aware of faint sounds, can be easily woken up.

NREM stage 2 - Light sleep, majority of sleep is spent in stage 2. Sleeper is considered truly asleep due to brain waves.

NREM stage 3 - Deep stage of sleep, difficult to wake sleeper in this stage. If woken sleeper is drowsy and disorientated. Sleep walking and talking occur in this stage

19
Q

Circadian rhythms

A

biological and behavioural changes that occur as part of a cycle that lasts around 24 hours

20
Q

Sleep wake cycles

A

24 hour cycle that is made up of time sleeping and time spent awake and alert

21
Q

Ultradian rhythms

A

biological and behavioural changes that occur in a cycle that lasts less then 24 hours

22
Q

SCN superchiasmatic nucleus

A

an area of hypothalamus that is responsible for regulating an individuals sleep wake patterns

23
Q

How does SCN regulate sleep wake cycle

A

the SCN receives info from both external and internal cues to help modulate circadian rhythm

24
Q

Pineal gland

A

a gland in brain responsible for the production and release of melatonin

25
Melatonin
a hormone released by pineal gland typically at night time to induce sleep
26
Sleep deprivation
Inadequate quantity and or quality of sleep
27
Full sleep deprivation
when individual has no sleep within 24 hour period
28
Partial sleep deprivation
when individual sleeps for some duration within 24 hour period but sleep duration is short or quality of sleep is poor
29
Effects of sleep deprivation (A)
Affective - changes in emotions and emotional responses that arise from sleep deprivation - reduced empathy - reduced ability to cope with stress - increase in mood swings
30
Affects of sleep deprivation (B)
Behavioural - changes in actions and the ability to control them that arise from sleep deprivation - Fatigue and lack of energy - Excessive sleepiness during day - Increased engaging in risk taking behaviours
31
Affects of sleep deprivation (C)
Cognitive - the changes in mental processes that arise from sleep deprivation - Reduced concentration - Lapses in attention - Illogical/irrational thinking
32
Blood alcohol concentration (BAC)
A measure of how much alcohol is in a persons blood stream - 0.05 17 hours of sleep deprivation (partial) - 0.10 24 hours of sleep deprivation (full)
33
ABC effects of sleep deprivation compared to BAC
A - happy, excited, angry, sad C - cognitive distoriations, slower mental processes, and decreased ability to solve and reasons
34
Sleep disorders
disturbances to typical sleeping and walking patterns
35
Circadian rhythm sleep disorders
sleep disorders that interfere with the typical regulation of the circadian rhythm of sleep leading to change in sleep wake cycle
36
Causes and effects of circadian sleep disorders
Cause - Disruption of sleep wake cycles, biological issues or shift work Effect - Fatigue, Irratibility, and amplified emotional response
37
Delayed sleep phase syndrome
type of circadian rhythm sleep disorders in which sleeping and waking occur later then usual
38
Advanced sleep phase disorder
type of circadian rhythm sleep disorders in which sleeping and waking occur earlier then usual
39
Shift work
an occupation that involves working at unusual hours, such as working overnight
40
Bright light therapy
a method used to adjust a persons circadian rhythm through exposure to a high intensity light source
41
Sleep hygiene
the practices and habits that promote a individuals sleep patterns
42
Zeitgbers
external cues from environment that affect circadian rhythm.
43
daylight Z
the typical light an individual is exposed to during the day and is mostly blue light
44
blue light Z
a type of light that can be emitted both naturally and artificially
45
temperature Z
the degree of external heat from environment that can influence quality and quantity of sleep
46
eating and drinking patterns Z
what, when and how much food is consumed by an individual
47
foods that can impact sleep Z
High fat food High sugar food Spicy food Alcohol Caffeine
