Psychology as a Science Flashcards
Psychology as a Science AO1
Science should be falsifiable, meaning we should be able to demonstrate that the ideas being tested are not true. Some studies and theories in psychology possess this trait, but some do not. Theories such as Bartletts reconstructive memory are based solely on observation, thus results are subjective. This leads to questions over validity and reliability of psychological findings
Examples for Y1 Topics u
Social - Scientific collecting data. Field experiment so less controlling of extraneous variables. Controlled this by matching ppts. Burger more controlled but again no data more holistic
Cognitive - Baddeley Lab study scientific controls. Artificial setting. However, cant demonstrate which part is used. HM helped with this
Biological - Raine Issues matching groups (23 brain injuries in NGRI ppts.). More scientific though reductionist.
Learning - Testable hypothesis and lab experiment. Bandura, Pavlov W&R
