Practical Issues in Design + Implementation of Research Flashcards
Examples for 4 Y1 Topics
Social - Sherif (1954). Involved matching boys carefully, which is difficult to match all variables. this study is not replicable as the boys would act so differently due to so many confounding variables
Cognitive - Baddeley wanted to claim cause + effect conclusions so had to avoid any confounding variables, but he could not be sure that individual difference didn’t have an effect
Biological - Raine (1997) Had to match the control + experimental groups, which is very difficult to do accurately and could affect results. Individual differences could have played a big part. Standardised task was good
Learning - Watson & Rayner (1928) - Unable to continue studying Little Albert as his mother moved away. Had to be sure he wasn’t already conditioned
Practical Issues in the design & implementation of research AO1
VALIDITY, RELIABILITY & GENERALISABILITY. Researchers must be sure the data they collect is really measuring what they are intending to study, and that extraneous variables don’t impact results. Also must ensure results could be replicated.
