Q

Ethics AO1

A

The way ppts. are treated is important as we do not have the right to cause harm to other people.
BPS code of ethics (2009) has 4 principles: RCRI Respect, competence, responsibility, integrity.

Animals Act 1986 says researchers must consider causes of pain and distress in animal studies e.g. Pavlov’s dogs, Skinners Rats

Another reason for the importance of ethics is it affecting the publics perception of psychology. If being in a study is annoying, distressing or harmful people could lose faith in psychology

Ethics Examples for Year 1 topics

A

Social - Sherif (1954). Boys did not give consent or debriefed, this disrespects their autonomy Parents gave presumptive consent but couldn’t be informed of everything going on. Gina Perry (2014) states that boys had unhappy experiences. Burger good though

Cognitive - Baddeley not many ethical issues. He respected all 4 aspects of the BPS code.
HM case study (1853) bad as they deceived him as they told him it was the day of the operation every day. He also couldn’t give informed consent

Biological - Raine (1997). NGRIs gave permission for PET scans to help their court cases. PET scanning is invasive as ppts. must be injected. NGRIs were anonymous for legal reasons, this improves ethics. Dabbs & Hargrove good ethically

Learning - Inflicted harm on an infant, this violates the principle of reducing harm. Mother gave presumptive consent and could withdraw at any point, which she did as she got a new job. Bandura good ethics though
