Conformity:
The tendency to adjust one’s thoughts/feelings/behavior with the agreement/accepted behavior at that time
Factors that influence Conformity:
Group size, unanimity, normative influence, informative influence, culture, social loafing, deindividuation
Group Size:
Number of people in group.
- Beyond a group of 4, conformity did not begin to increase significantly.
- Group larger than 15 has lower levels of conformity (subgroups start to form)
Unanimity
Complete agreement of all group members, must harder to stand out against complete agreement.
Normative Influence
Influence of social norms impacts the way you behave. Conforming to be liked and accepted by the group
Informative Influence
Accepting other people’s views when we are uncertain ourselves. Conforming to be right. (getting advice)
. Culture:
Individuals from collectivist are more likely to conform, because collective cultures value group goals
Social Loafing
Tendency of an individual to make less effort when involved in a group activity rather than working alone.
Deindividuation:
- someone in a group loses their personal identity in a group
- becomes less mindful of their actions and their outcomes due to a belief of going unnoticed,
- reduced conformity to group norms.
Ally effect, ,
when there is an ally who shares your view, which results in less conformity.
