Who is Sigmund Freud? and what did he acknowledge about unconscious minds?
One of the first psychologists to acknowledge that our unconscious minds can control our behaviour.
What did Sigmund Freud suggest about what determines behaviour?
That behaviour is determined more by psychological factors than by biological or environmental factors.

Believed that most of our everyday actions and behaviours are a product of the unconscious mind.

When the unconscious minds reveals itself during dreams or in slips of tongue.

What does id follow ? and at what age does it start to be present?
- present from birth
- follows pleasure principle
What does ego follow? and when does it develop?
- Develop around the age of 2 years
- Follow reality principle
What is the role of ego?
To resolve conflict between the demands of the id and the superego
What is the super ego and what is it based on? at what age does it start to develop?
- Develops at about 5 years old
- It is our sense of what is right and wrong
- Based on morality principle
What does the superego represent? and what does it do?
Represents the moral standards of the child and punishes ego for any ‘wrongdoing’ through guilt
How does ego create defence mechanisms?
They operate unconsciously to distort reality so that anxiety is reduced
What are examples of ego defence mechanisms?
Repression
Denial
Displacement

unconscious blocking of unacceptable thoughts

How does the ego defence mechanisms distort reality to reduce anxiety?
Stops the individual to be aware of unpleasant thoughts and feelings associated with traumatic response.
