Memory: Working memory model AO1 Flashcards
What does the working memory model show?
How STM is organised
What is working model memory?
It is the ‘mental space’ when we are organising our thoughts.
Who proposed working memory model?
Baddeley & Hitch
What are the 4 components of the working memory model?
central executive
phonological loop
visuo-spatial sketchpad
episodic buffer
What are the roles of central executive?
It is an attentional process that:
- Monitors incoming data
- Makes decisions and allocates subsystems to tasks
What is the capacity of central executive?
limited processing capacity
What are the roles of the phonological loop?
- It deals with auditory information
- It preserves the order that is received
What are the subdivisions of the phonological loop?
Phonological store
Articulatory process
What does the phonological store do?
It stores the words you hear
What does the articulatory process do? what is its capacity?
Allows maintenance rehearsal that repeats sounds or words in a ‘loop’
- It has the capacity of 2 seconds
What is the visuo-spatial sketchpad used for?
- It is used when we are visualising something
- It stores visual and spatial information
What is the capacity of the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
It has a limited capacity of about 3 or 4 objects
What are the subdivisions of the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
Visual cache
Inner scribe
What does the visual cache do?
stores visual data
What does the inner scribe do?
records the arrangement of objects in the visual field
What are the roles of the episodic buffer?
- It is a temporary store for information
- It integrates (combines) visual, spatial, and verbal information
- It maintains time sequencing (the order in which events happen)
What is the capacity of episodic buffer?
limited capacity of 4 chunks
