Psychodynamic Approach Flashcards
Who developed the psychodynamic approach
Sigmund Freud
What did Freud believe about the role of the unconcious
Freud believed that a large part of our mind is not accessible (The unconcious)
Yet it can still influence our behaviour
Explain Freud’s Iceberg
Freud compared the mind to an iceberg
The concious mind is present at the top
Whereas the Unconcious mind is presented below the iceberg to reperesent that it is not available
What are the 3 parts of the Mind according to Freud
Concious
Preconcious
Unconcious
What is the Concious Mind defined to be
The part of the mind we are aware of
What is the Preconcious Mind defined to be
Not quite aware of but just below the surface of thoughts
What is the Unconcious Mind defined to be
Drives and instincts we are unaware of
Locked away or forgotten
What 3 aspects create our personality
Id
Ego
Superego
What is the Id
The Unconcious Mind
The desire for bad behaviours
What is the Ego
Reduce conflict
Tries to accept the Id’s thoughts but in a socially accpetable way
What is the Superego
The Morality Mind
Develops guilt thoughts
Pushes us to be good rather than bad
