Psychoanalytic Perspective
View human development as shaped by unconscious forces that motivate the behavior.
Fixation
An arrest in development that can manifest in adult personality as a result of receiving too little or too much gratification during the oral, anal, and phallic stages.
Oral stage fixation
Babies whose main source of pleasure is not oral can grow up to be nail biters or smokers. They can develop personality traits such as overeating, excessive drinking, talking too much, pessimism, and aggressiveness.
Oral Stage
From birth to 2 years old. Erogenous zone is the mouth. Activities include sucking, biting and swallowing.
Anal Stage
From 2 to 3 years old. Erogenous zone is the anus. Activities include toilet training.

This includes being organized, tidy, clean, and being a perfectionist.
Anal Expulsive Personalities
This includes being messy, disorganized, stubborn, and generous.
Phallic Stage
From 3 years old to 6 years of age. Erogenous zone is the genitals. Activities include sexual desire for the opposite parents.
Phallic stage Fixation
This includes sexual deviances (overindulging and avoidance), confused or weak sexual identity.
Simple Oedipus Complex
Young boy is attracted to the mother and sees the father as a rival.
Complete Oedipus Complex
All of us are bisexual, both feminine and masculine.
Electra Complex
Penis envy; being hostile towards the mother and being attracted to the father.
Latency Stage
From 6 years old until puberty. No eregenous zone. A period of relative emotional calm, intellectual and social explorations. Sexual urges are directed to school works relationships and hobbies.
