Apgar Scale
A standard form of measurement of a newborn’s condition; appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respiration.
Given during:
It is taken one minute after delivery, and then again five minutes after birth.
How is it rated?
Newborns are rated on a scale from 0 to 10.
A score below 7 indicates that the baby requires assistance with breathing.
A score of 4 indicates that immediate lifesaving treatment is needed.
Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale
It is a neurological and behavioral test that measures a newborn’s responsiveness to the environment. It takes about 30 minutes to administer and is based on the baby’s performance.
BNBAS purpose as per scientists and researchers?
To identify strengths and vulnerabilities as one responds to their physical and social environment anad also to predict future developments.
What does BNBAS assess?
It assesses motor organization
(activity level), reflexes (ability to bring hand to mouth), state changes (irritability, excitabiity and the ability to quiet down after being upset), attention (general alertness), interactive capacities (response to auditory and visual stimuli), and indication of CNS instability, such as tremors and changes skin color.
