What are some warning signs of child abuse
Injuries of different ages, injuries inconsistent with a child’s abilities
Lab abnormalities based on pattern of injuries
Shaped injuries like belts, spatulas, burns, or hematomas
What should you do if you suspect child abuse
Mandated reporting and documentations identifying injuries in other kids
Criteria for ADHD
Must last >6 months with onset before 12yrs
No association with psychosis
Must occur in more than one setting (home/school)
Medication tx for ADHD. What is their MOA, and what are some examples
Stimulant Drugs which increase Norepinephrine and Dopamine
Methylphenidate (Riatline, Concerta)
D-Amphetamine (Adderall)
Lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse)
What are common characteristics of ADHS
Short attention span with easy distractability, hyperactivity, and imuplsivity
What is Autism
A spectrum of developmental disorders with social and communication deficits
Tx for Autism
Refer for neuropsychological testing, behavioral modification, meds
What is anorexia
Refusal to maintain minimally normal weight
Sx of Anorexia
Weight loss, Bradycardia, Emancieated, Skin/Hair changes, dry skin, salivary gland hypertrophy, amenorrha
Tx of Anorexia
Hospitalization if
What is Bulimia
Purging behaviors at least twice a week
Sx of Bulimia
Normal weight or overweight
Binge eating then purging with laxatives, enemas, diuretics, or weight loss meds
Tooth pitting or enamel decay and finger trauma
HYPOKALEMIA, Hypomagnesemia
Tx for Bulimia
Cognitive behavior therapy
Fluoxetine
Sx of Depression
Anhedonia, Dysphoric mood, fatigability, morbid ideation, somatic sx (changes in sleep, eating patterns, concentration patterns)
Tx of Depression
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Meds when sx interfere with realtionships or school: SSRI first then SNRI
