psych study Flashcards
excitatory neurotransmitter
stimulate or activate postsynaptic neurons to perform their functions.
Glutamate
is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the CNS, it enhances information transmission by making postsynaptic neurons more likely to fire. crucial in learning and memory, promoting LTP.
inhibitory neurotransmitters
block or prevent post synaptic neurons from firing.
Gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA)
is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS, inhibiting firing. without inhibitory effect of GABA activation of postsynaptic neurons may get out of control.
approach coping strategy
attempt to confront and deal directly with a stressor and its affects.
avoidant coping strategy
attempt to deal indirectly or evade the stressor and its affects.
lazarus and folkman transactional model and stress and coping
a model to describe stress as a psychological process that is influenced by individual differences in how people respond to a stressor.
stress involves an encounter (transaction) between individual and external environment.
a stress response depends on the persons interpretation (appraisal) of the stressor + ability to cope with it.
primary appraisal
we evaluate or judge the significance of the event. we decide if the vent is irrelevant, benign positive or stressful.
secondary appraisal
we evaluate our ability to control or overcome the situation. our options for dealing with the event may be internal or external.
