general adaptation sydrome Flashcards
1
Q
GAS
A
is a three-stage physiological response to stress that occurs regardless of the stressor that is encountered.
2
Q
stage 1
A
alarm reaction:
Occurs when the person first becomes aware of the stressor
SHOCK → temporary → ability to deal with stressor falls below normal level
COUNTER SHOCK → sympathetic NS activated → body’s resistance to stressor increases → fight/flight
3
Q
stage 2
A
resistance:
maximise resources to cope and adapt.
Cortisol continues to be released at an elevated level during this stage
4
Q
stage 3
A
exhaustion:
weak and vulnerable
If the stressor is not dealt with successfully and stress continues, the organism enters a stage of exhaustion.
