protective factor
is something that enhances and helps to protect mental wellbeing and reduces the likelihood that mental ill-health will occur.
risk factor
is something that increases the likelihood of experiencing mental ill-health, or can make existing mental health difficulties more severe or long lasting.
biological P.F:
adequate sleep + adequate nutritional intake + hydration
nutritional intake + hydration
diet with minimal amounts of the bad things and more of the good things
decreased risk of diabetes + CVD
physical health promotes mental hwb, we generally feel better when eating well
adequate sleep
there is a strong link between sleep + mental health.
Poor sleep quantity or quality over a sustained period is a risk factor for the development or perpetuation of a range of mental disorders, including mood, anxiety, addictive, personality and psychotic disorders.
-Sleep triggers the release of hormones that affect growth and other functions.

mindfulness meditation
cognitive behavioural strategies
techniques drawn from (CBT) to identify, assess and correct faulty patterns of thinking and problem behaviours that may be threatening or adversely affecting mental wellbeing.
cognitive strategies
process of learning to identify, challenge, and modify or replace negative, irrational thoughts (or cognitive distortions) with more reasonable and helpful ways of thinking.
behavioural strategies
involves identifying and scheduling activities that promote enjoyment or reduce stress.
-going for a walk
-calling a friend
mindulness meditation
type of meditation in which a person focuses attention on their breathing, whilst thoughts, feelings, and sensations are experienced freely as they arise.
-slow down their racing thoughts, let go of negativity, and calm both their mind and body.
It cannot treat mental ill-health on its own
social P.F:
support from family, friends or community (authentic + energising)
social support
assistance, care or comfort provided by people to each other, typically to help them cope with a stressor or mental health issue.
-beneficial when authentic, energising + uplifting
-can be practical, tangible or emotional
how to provide emotional support:
- validate forst, reframe second
- avoid downward spirals
- be authentic + energising
- listen well
- be responsive, not dismissive
