operant conditioning Flashcards
operant conditioning
Operant conditioning (OC) is a learning process whereby the consequences of behaviour determine the likelihood that it will be performed again in the future.
ANTECEDENT
The environmental stimulus that precedes the relevant behavior and indicates the consequence.
Hanging out with a group of friends in the schoolyard.
BEHAVIOUR
Voluntary activity that has an effect on the environment
tell a ‘bad’ joke
CONSEQUENCE
The environmental effect that follows the behaviour.
Ridiculed by friends.
Impact on future behaviour?
Reinforcement (positive or negative) increases the likelihood of a behavior being repeated. Punishment decreases the likelihood of a behavior being repeated.
Positive punishment - less likely to tell ‘bad’ jokes to the group of friends.
